Welcome, history lovers, to the land of colossal temples and stunning landscapes! Hampi, the former capital of the mighty Vijayanagara Empire, is an open-air museum spread across Karnataka’s rocky terrain. This site demands a detailed exploration, and our 3 Days and 2 Nights Itinerary is designed to capture its ancient grandeur without missing the iconic sunrise spots.
🗿 Hampi Itinerary: 3 Days, 2 Nights
Hampi is geographically split into the main heritage area (East Bank) and the laid-back Hippie Island (West Bank). This itinerary covers both sides.
Day 1: Royal Centre and Architectural Marvels (East Bank)
Morning (8:30 AM): Start at the Virupaksha Temple, the oldest and still actively worshipped temple in Hampi. Its towering gopuram greets you as you enter the main Hampi bazaar street.
Late Morning: Explore the Hampi Bazaar leading up to the Achutaraya Temple. Walk the historic cobbled path, imagining the bustling market that once existed here.
Noon: Visit the spectacular Vittala Temple Complex. This is Hampi’s crown jewel, famous for its Stone Chariot and the unique Musical Pillars inside the main hall. Allow ample time here to marvel at the precision engineering.
Afternoon/Evening: Explore the Royal Enclosure, which houses ruins like the Lotus Mahal (a beautiful Indo-Islamic structure) and the Elephant Stables. End your day at the Hemakuta Hill for a spectacular first sunset over the ruins.
Day 2: Desert Vibes and Sunset Hues (West Bank/Hippie Island)
Today requires crossing the Tungabhadra River via a coracle boat or the bridge. The West Bank is much more rustic.
Morning: Cross over to Anegundi/Hippie Island. Begin by visiting the Sanapur Lake area. Here, you can opt for a peaceful coracle ride among the massive boulders.
Late Morning/Noon: Explore the temples on this side, including the Anjaneya Hill Temple (believed to be the birthplace of Lord Hanuman). If you are up for a climb, the views are fantastic.
Afternoon: Check into your accommodation on the West Bank (if you choose to stay here overnight for the desert experience) or return to the East Bank.
Evening: Head to Matanga Hill (near the main ruins) for the most famous sunrise/sunset spot in Hampi. The view over the entire boulder-strewn landscape is breathtaking and a mandatory photo opportunity for any Musafir.
Day 3: Spiritual Heights and Departure
Your final day focuses on powerful temples and historical insights before concluding your trip.
Morning (8:00 AM): Visit the Krishna Temple, built by King Krishnadevaraya. Though in ruins, its carvings, especially the famous monolith statue of Narasimha, are incredibly powerful.
Late Morning: Explore the Hazara Rama Temple, known for its beautifully detailed friezes depicting scenes from the Ramayana—a true historian’s delight.
Lunch: Enjoy a final meal near your hotel.
Afternoon: Depending on your train or bus schedule, you might visit the Queen’s Bath (another excellent example of Indo-Islamic architecture) before heading to your onward journey.
